As the sister and daughter of people with autism, Kaelin was inspired to pursue a career in disability work. Kaelin graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, a certificate in Health Science, and a certificate in Nonprofit Fundraising and Management. Starting first as a volunteer then instructor,
Kaelin became Program Director for Lifelong Learning with Friends, a UT-based postsecondary education program aimed at adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She works as a full-time neuroscience researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, leading genetic research about the social challenges associated.
