Substance Use Disorder Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) and Alcohol Exposed Pregnancy Prevention

This course will offer a brief overview of the development of SBIRT as a system change initiative based on a public health approach. It will focus on the most evidence-based tool to screen for alcohol (AUDIT) and its adaptation, the US-AUDIT.  Participants will learn about risky drinking limits and the steps to screen, provide a brief intervention, and refer to treatment. They will be presented with case scenarios illustrating the implementation of SBIRT utilizing Motivational Interviewing, and will have the opportunity to role play using US-AUDIT. Lastly, participants will learn about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) and prevention through SBIRT, as well as the role of behavioral health providers in the implementation of SBIRT and identification and support of individuals who may have an FASD.
