Annual Symposium

The Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy’s 7th Annual Symposium is a three-day program, scheduled for April 16-18, 2018 in Austin, Texas, that will bring together professionals from across the state to participate in panel discussions, presentations and professional development workshops focused on providing the information, resources and tools necessary to create change and improve adolescent health in Texas. 

The theme – Empowering the Next Generation – will focus on creating opportunities for Texas youth, empowering them, helping them grow and learn, while also equipping them with the tools they need to create a successful future for themselves, their peers and their future families. 

We’ll be asking and answering the big questions: What is the state of the adolescent health landscape in Texas and beyond? How can we encourage teens and young adults to make responsible choices? How can we integrate a new generation of voices - both teens and young adults - into our on-going work? And, how can we invest in and magnify youth voices so that they are well equipped to engage their peers and communities?

Symposium Goals/Objectives

The Texas Campaign’s Symposium provides a unique forum for bi-directional communication between issue experts and on-the-ground professionals regarding evidence-based information and research. A key goal of this event is to inform and educate participants while also influencing them to lead change within their local communities. The objectives are:

• To provide the latest information on teen pregnancy and adolescent development that is appropriate for the diverse knowledge base and skills of participants;
• To identify and invest in youth and young adult voices to draw in those who are directly affected by adolescent health advocacy;
• To increase participant knowledge regarding culturally sensitive, health-related research and evidence-based interventions focused on racial/ethnic minorities and rural, socioeconomically disadvantaged and medically underserved adolescents living in Texas;
• To provide best practices for promoting adolescent and child health, youth friendly services and trauma informed care and to explore innovative programs of each;
• To engage, inspire, innovate and advocate – in partnership with communities and all stakeholders – working towards the end of teen pregnancy through prevention measures and comprehensive care and treatment for all youth; and
• To raise awareness that progress in responding to the teen pregnancy epidemic is being achieved at different speeds – in many parts of the State, great advances have been made while in many others, rates continue to rise.
