Detecting and Addressing Disparities among Latino Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Dr. Sandra Magaña of the University of Illinois at Chicago will deliver a talk on Tuesday, January 17th at 11AM in the Utopia Theater at the School of Social Work. 

 

The title of Dr. Magaña’s talk is “Detecting and Addressing Disparities among Latino Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their Families.” 

 

Dr. Magaña is Professor of Disability and Human Development in the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  She received an MSW degree from California State University, San Bernardino, and a PhD from the Heller Graduate School of Social Policy at Brandeis University.  For many years, Dr. Magaña was a Professor in the School of Social Work and the Waisman Center at University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She was also director of the Chicana/o & Latina/o Studies Program at UW-Madison from 2008-2011.  Her research focus is on the cultural context of families who care for persons with disabilities and mental illness and the experiences of parents who have disabilities.  More recently, her research has focused on health disparities for minority caregivers and diagnosis and treatment disparities for Latino and Black children with an autism spectrum disorder; and on interventions to reduce health and service disparities.
