Supporting Children with Autism in Naturalistic Settings: Creating an Ecosystem of Care for Autism

Presenter: Michael Siller, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, College of Education, at the University of North Texas (UNT)
This talk will review a program of intervention research focused on toddlers and preschoolers with autism. Throughout, the emphasis will be on efforts to implement evidence-based strategies in naturalistic settings, including parent-mediated strategies to support children’s learning at home and teacher-mediated strategies to support children’s learning in inclusive preschool settings. Dr. Siller will review results from descriptive longitudinal studies, clinical trials, and implementation science research, and discuss implications of this research for his transformative leadership at the UNT Kristin Farmer Autism Center.

• Participants will be able to describe current trends in autism intervention research using the Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) framework.
• Participants will be able to describe evidence-based, parent-implemented strategies for promoting social-communication in young children with autism during natural home routines.
• Participants will be able to describe evidence-based, teacher-implemented strategies for promoting social-communication in young children with autism in inclusive preschool settings.
About the Presenter:
Michael Siller, PhD, is a developmental psychologist studying how children with autism develop and learn. He is particularly interested in learning that occurs in familiar daily routines and natural environments. His research includes descriptive longitudinal studies to understand developmental mechanisms, intervention trials to determine efficacy, and implementation science to make evidence-based practices accessible to providers in the community.
