Family Centered, Culturally Adapted Practices Informed by the Voices and Lived Experiences of Immigrant Families of Autistic Individuals

The presentation will provide an overview of efforts to
(a) better understand the lived experiences of immigrant families of autistic individuals as they navigate the educational and community systems in the U.S. and
(b) collaborate with culturally diverse communities, including Asian immigrants, through community-based intervention research to support various development domains, such as language and literacy, of young autistic learners.

Learning Objectives
• Examine the lived experiences of Korean immigrant fathers of autistic children and youth 
• Understand strategies to train young siblings of autistic children to use evidence-based practices such as Enhanced Milieu Teaching to support language and communication development 
• Explore cultural adaptation approaches to virtual literacy instruction for young autistic dual language preschoolers

About the Presenter
Veronica Kang is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education at the University of Maryland College Park, and a faculty affiliate at the University of Maryland Autism Research Consortium (UMARC) and the University of Maryland Research Equity and Access in Communication and Hearing (UMD REACH).
