Topic: When to intervene with siblings of autistic children? Should we wait and see?

Speakers: Lauren Hampton, PhD, BCBA-D and Hannah Fipp-Rosenfield, PhD, SLP

Dr. Hampton and Dr. Fipp-Rosenfield will present the results of our recently concluded NIH-funded study examining when and how to best support infant/toddler siblings of autistic children. They used a sequential multiple assignment randomized trial (SMART) to evaluate if intervening early by coaching parents to support communication skills, resulted in better parent and child outcomes compared to children enrolled in developmental monitoring. Children who demonstrated signs of communication delay after 6-weeks were re-randomized to receive parent coaching with and without video feedback. Children who demonstrated no signs of communication delay after 6-weeks were assigned to developmental monitoring. Children were evaluated on social communication growth and parents were observed interacting with their children and rated on their use of social communication support strategies. Dr. Hampton and Dr. Fipp-Rosenfield will present the results of this study and the implications, including acceptability and feasibility of the protocol.
