Improving reading comprehension for students with autism: Journey from development through initial efficacy

Improving the reading comprehension of adolescents with ASD is critical for increasing both their opportunities for successful postsecondary experiences including attending college and obtaining meaningful employment. This presentation details a multi-year development process leading to the design and investigation of a reading comprehension intervention for middle grade students with autism derived from several theoretical and empirical lines of research.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will identify components of effective reading comprehension interventions for middle grade students with autism.
2. Participants will learn how the interventions described were developed and implemented.
3. Participants will acquire information for practical application of the reading intervention components designed for middle grade students with autism.

About the Presenter:
Colleen Klein Reutebuch, Ph.D., is a senior project manager/researcher at The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk, The University of Texas at Austin. Reutebuch directs large-scale intervention, evaluation, and professional development projects. She is co-PI of the OSEP funded Investigating Adaptive Intervention Model (AIM) Coaching and the IES funded Initial Efficacy Trial of Reading Enhancements for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Reading Comprehension Intervention. She taught students with learning difficulties and disabilities in the middle grades and high school and was an assistant professor of special education at Texas Tech University.
