Katie Smith is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Texas - Austin. She received a BSW from Troy University. Inspired by her younger sister’s adoption and journey with autism, Katie’s passion for social justice drives her to create a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive. For the past several years, Katie worked as a Child Welfare Case Manager with Milwaukee County Child Protective Services. In that role, she worked with children and families from diverse backgrounds to secure safety, stability, and permanency, all while deepening her understanding of the gaps in services for individuals with disabilities.
Katie is also excited to be part of the ACT LEND training program, where she’ll learn how to tailor her leadership and advocacy skills specifically to autism spectrum disorders. Katie would like to pursue a career in policy work, specifically focusing on the intersection of child welfare and disability. Katie would love to contribute to policy that designs inclusive systems that ensure families like hers have the resources and support they need.
